FOR TEACHERS

Fulbright Teacher Exchange Opportunity 2010-2011

The Academy for Educational Development, the U.S. State Department, and iEARN-USA are offering two exciting opportunities for educators interested in spending a semester or a year abroad: the 2010-2011 Fulbright Teacher Classroom Exchange and the Distinguished Awards in Teaching programs.

The Fulbright Teacher Exchange program provides opportunities for K-12 teachers to partipate in direct one-to-one classroom exchanges with peers from other countries for a semester or an academic year. This year's participating countries include: Czech Republic, France, Ghana, Hungary, India, Mexico, Slovak REpublic, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Exchange teachers provide students with new perspectives while gaining an understanding for different cultures and educational models. Deadline for applying to the Fulbright Teacher Classroom Exchange program is October 15, 2009.

The Distinguished Awards program offers fellowships to highly accomplished U.S. and international teachers to receive a grant to study at a university, conduct research, teach classes and workshops, and develop a capstone project pertaining to their field of educational inquiry during a semester overseas. This year's participating countries include: Argentina, Finland, India, Israel, Singapore, South Africa, and the United States. Deadline for applying to the Distinguished Awards program is January 15, 2010. *Additional countries may be added prior to the January 15th deadline.

JOINT Fall 2009 Online Course of Advanced High School Japanese

September 24 - November 12, 2009

The JOINT online professional development program of the Alliance of Associations of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) will offer “Maximizing the Effectiveness of Your Advanced High School Japanese Course” in Fall 2009. This 6-week course will provide high school teachers of Japanese at the advanced level (including those who are preparing their students for the AP Japanese Language and Culture Test) with training and resources to develop a curriculum that enhances students’ proficiency in all four skills as well as cultural knowledge. The course utilizes background readings and some existing materials as examples, but hands-on experience is emphasized, and course participants will create their own materials to be used in their classes. Participants will work on assigned readings and lectures independently, hold online discussions in small groups that include both native- and non-native-speaking teachers, and work collaboratively in pairs to develop materials. Assignments and evaluations are designed to accommodate the differing needs of those who are enrolled in the course. Participants will be asked for permission to share the materials they create (via the Alliance website) with the broader Japanese language education community after the end of the course.

2010/2011 National Security Language Initiative for  Youth (NSLI-Y)
Sponsored by the US Department of State

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) is a series of overseas intensive language programs sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. One is for students and the other is for institutions/ organizations. Merit-based scholarships are available to study overseas for summer, semester and academic year programs in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Farsi), Russian and Turkish. In addition, your school, school system and/or local university can apply for a sub-grantee award to organize and implement six- to eight-week overseas intensive language programs to take place in summer 2010.

Interested students should visit www.nsliforyouth. org, where they can complete the online application. The deadline is December 4, 2009. Organizations interested in Summer 2010 sub-grant opportunities can view the Request for Proposal (RFP) by clicking here. The submission deadline for proposals is November 16, 2009. 2010 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program will offer intensive summer language institutes overseas in eleven critical need foreign languages for summer 2010. The CLS Program provides fully-funded seven to ten week group-based intensive language instruction and extensive cultural enrichment experiences held overseas at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels (beginning not offered for Azerbaijani, Chinese, Persian or Russian) for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students. The on-line application for CLS Program awards will be available November 9, 2009 and the deadline to apply will be December 18, 2009.

Kathryn Davis Fellowships for Peace: Investing in the Study of Critical Languages

Kathryn Davis Fellowships for Peace: Investing in the Study of Critical Languages is a full scholarship for intensive language study at the Middlebury Summer Language Schools in: Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian. 100 Davis Fellowships are offered to cover the full cost of summer language study from beginner to graduate levels in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian at the Middlebury College Language Schools. Fellowship grants cover the full comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board) at the Middlebury summer Language Schools. The Davis Fellowships are merit-based and intended for exceptionally qualified individuals with demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: international, global, or area studies; international politics and economics; peace and security studies; and/or conflict resolution. Individuals in other fields, including working professionals, are also encouraged to apply if their field of expertise requires them to study one of the critical languages listed above. All Davis Fellowship applications must be postmarked by February 1, 2010.
